Murdered Catholic priest John Maina

Detectives investigating the violent murder of Father John Maina from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu now suggest that his attackers may have been after a donation linked to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Recent findings from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicate that the priest was followed by individuals seeking a portion of the funds he reportedly received from Gachagua, who, along with other politicians, attended a church event on April 27 that Fr. Maina led. Authorities also revealed that the priest had previously expressed concerns for his safety, although he had not filed any formal complaints.

Sh400,000 Gift from Gachagua: What You Need to Know

The DCI has confirmed that Fr. Maina was being followed by individuals seeking a portion of the money he reportedly received after officiating the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Ceremony for former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Investigations are also underway regarding Fr. Maina’s claims of being in danger, although he did not file a report with the police. Initial findings indicate that he died shortly after alleging he had been kidnapped in Nyahururu, contradicting earlier claims that he was murdered and his body discarded along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

Instead, the DCI clarified that he passed away while receiving treatment at St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil. On May 15, 2025, a motorcycle rider found him along the highway with visible head injuries and took him to the hospital, where he succumbed shortly after arrival.

Later, his remains were moved to the Nyahururu Sub-County morgue for autopsy and preservation. Additional toxicological testing was necessary after an autopsy performed by Dr. Titus Ngulungu on May 19, 2025, revealed that the head injuries were not the direct cause of death. The DCI has already recorded a number of statements to aid in the inquiry and has asked the public to maintain composure in the face of mounting rumors.
